[Thailand] How to obtain a driving license? Getting a driver’s license for foreigners

Driving licenses are generally divided into 2 types.

(1) Temporary driving license (2 year)

(2) 5-year Driving License. After temporary driving license are expired after 2 years. You can renew to a 5-year driving license.

Required documents.

(1) Passport with non-immigrant VISA (Original and a certified copy)
(2) Original present resident address in Thailand certify from Embassy or Immigration Bureau (Valid for 1 year)
(3) Work permit (Original and a certified copy)
(4) Original medical certificate (5 Diseases form) from Clinic or Hospital (Valid for 1 month)

Procedure

(1) Check the documents
(2) Submit an application form
(3) Color blindness test
(4) Pay the fee (Fee 505 Baht)
(5) Take a training around 1 hour. *
(6) Take a physical test such as reaction to redlight or estimating the distance of objects.
(7) Driving test
(8) Theory test

The Department of Land Transport in Thailand recommends getting online training first for convenience. You need to take a photo or screenshot to use as evidence to prove whether you take a lesson or not.

Condition for bypassing driving and theory test

If you have a driving license according to international law, you can use as evidence to bypass the driving and theory test. Although, that driving license need to still be valid. In addition, the driving license must be translated into English or Thai. Also, the translation is needed to certify by the embassy of the country that issued the license.

Booking a queue to apply for a driving license.

It’s able to walk in without reservation. There will be a separate walk-in queue for both Thais and foreigners. You can also reserve a walk-in queue for the next day as well.

For example, the Chatuchak branch is open to 40 walk-ins for foreigners at the morning.
